tango
» Package 1Tango is one of the most characteristic symbols of Buenos Aires. During this original tour we will focus our attention on this fascinating dance that has gone beyond Argentina's frontiers and is now popular worldwide.
We must search the origin of tango around 1880, a time that witnessed an interesting mixture between Spanish, local and Immigrant cultures. We begin our tour in the humble quarters, tango's birthplace, where Buenos Aires adjoined with the countryside. There, local inhabitants, gauchos and immigrants used to frequent the brothels, in part due to the lack of women, which in 1880 represented only 30% of the population.
We will then visit the 'conventillos' or tenement houses, where many immigrant working class families lived all together. Here tango began to develop, but soon gave a big step and moved to Corrientes Avenue, where it lived its full swing in the first decades of the 20th century. Since then, tango has been the cultural symbol of Buenos Aires par excellence. We will walk along this typical avenue and then we will visit the Palais de Glace, an elegant dance hall where the upper class began listening to tango and dancing it. There was a confusing episode involving Carlos Gardel here, where apparently he was shot for a lady's fight.
Next we head towards the Hipódromo of Palermo, or Palermo Racetrack, whose exciting horse races inspired many tango songs, like the famous "Por una cabeza" by Gardel and Le Pera. Finally, we will visit Abasto, a neighborhood where one can breathe tango on every corner. There we will see Carlos Gardel's house, the great tango singer, also known as "Abasto's dark-haired man". In this house Gardel lived with his mother until 1933, when he traveled to Paris to conquer the city with his unforgettable voice. His house has recently been declared heritage of the city.
